Big Sur is reopened

As of January 14, 2026, Highway 1 through Big Sur is re-opened. The work on the last section, Regent’s Slide, was completed ahead of the scheduled date of March 30. Regent’s Slide goes back to February 9, 2024. At the time, a section called Paul’s Slide had already been closed from January 14, 2023. Six miles south, Paul’s Slide re-opened June 23, 2024.

The closure has meant that you could only reach certain parts of Big Sur from the south, from Cambria or from the north from Carmel.

Wade’s parents recently visited Big Sur. It was a fall road-trip to see the changing colours, from Mammoth to Lake Tahoe and then down to Big Sur from Carmel.

With Highway 1 completely open again, travellers have eagerly taken to the road through one of the most iconic and famous areas of California.
