West is Best for Sunsets in Kaua’i

Kaua’i is a beautiful island and offers many spectacular sunset vistas. Visitors are keen to discover the best spot to be. Many say Hanalei on the North Shore. Other say it’s the South Shore. Honestly, you can see beautiful sunsets just about everywhere. On the east side, Kapa’a is a great place for sunrises. The skies in Kapa’a do get to be these incredible pinks, golden clouds, for the sunsets.

Sunset at Kealia

Living in Kaua’i I have seen many stunning sunsets and what a sight. From being in Hanalei or the South Shore for the day and driving home as the night approaches. Then we moved to the west side of the island, just blocks away from the ocean. Standing outside our door, I can hear the roar of the ocean and if I squint a little, I can sometimes see it as well. This is a special place.

On my early morning walks, I can see the sun rise and the western skies go from black to blue to pink.. Further down the road at Davidson’s Point is where I watch sunsets. During certain times of the year, the sun sets between Ni’ihau and the seabird sanctuary, Lehua Island.

I first spotted Ni’ihau from Waimea Canyon. Southwest of Kaua’i, the “Forbidden Island” is closed to outsiders, unless invited. The Robinson family, whose ancestor purchased it for $10,000 in gold in 1864 from King Kamehameha, still owns it. A dwindling population of native Hawaiians continue to reside on Ni’ihau.

The economy on the island includes shell lei making from the highly-valued and unique Ni’ihau shells, that are only found on the island. These beautiful shells are very small and it takes time and skill to gather them and to make leis and jewelry. There are several types of Niʻihau seashells. The rarest ones are the hot-pink and black kahelelani.

So if you’re looking for the best spot to see the sunset in Kaua’i come to the west side. And really, it’s beautiful everywhere on the island. Stop and take the time to look at the sunset, wherever you are. Step out onto the lanai, look out of the window. Kick off your shoes and slippers and stand in the sand and water. Exhale and let everything go. You’re in Hawai’i.
