Silk Screen Workshop with Naiise

With Christmas coming up and my trip back home to Vancouver this month, I’ve been looking for interesting gifts. So I signed up for the silk screen workshop with Naiise. It’s led by Do or Die Trying. This was a workshop to print on a top or a tote bag. The designs were already made and the screens already prepped. I chose a top and so now I have a tank top with a cute fox design with “Oh For Fox Sake.” Cute.

Naiise comes from Singlish meaning nice. Founded by Dennis Tay, this platform with an online and brick and mortar shop features local designers and artists, along with some overseas brands . The mission is to make design accessible. As part of their #NaiiseChristmas project, the company is offering various workshops and gatherings.

About Silk screen Printing

I’ve been fascinated with silk screen printing. You can get such beautiful multi-layered designs. It’s done using a fine mesh screen to transfer the design to the material. Using a squeegee, we press the ink through. The design, whether on film or paper, is placed on the screen that’s pre-coated with an emulsion that’s light sensitive. Once the design is in place, the emulsion is exposed to light, creating a stencil.

Silk screening is now popular in many different industries. Examples come from China, dating back to the Song Dynasty (960-1279 AD).

2025 Update : Naiise ceased operations in April 2021. Its founder filed for personal bankruptcy. It’s struggled to pay vendors since 2016 and in hopes of riding out this difficult financial situation, he had also tapped into his own savings and business loans.
