Probably the most well-known name in roots reggae for most people is Bob Marley. Until recently, I thought it was all reggae. Roots reggae focuses on social consciousness and includes more of the struggle against Babylon (corrupt divisive capitalism) so spiritual themes as well as lyrics about everyday life. Some roots reggae artists on our playlist include Anthony B, Barrington Levy, Bob Marley and his descendants, Steel Pulse, and Mike Love. Wade’s got a very big roots reggae playlist but I suck at remembering names.
Wade first introduced me to Mike Love with Permanent Holiday. Here’s an acoustic version. So incredible.
We were stoked that San Luis Obispo was one of the stops on Mike Love and the Full Circle’s tour. It’s also a small venue which is more my thing. It was a great concert and we both captured videos and photos, which the band allowed. They sang from Mike’s new album, Leaders, out a few months ago and also fan favourites, like “Permanent Holiday.” For one song, he unplugged his ukulele and under a spotlight, he gifted us with a beautiful song, a poignant song, being on the road away from home and family for long stretches of time.
Afterwards, Mike Love also came out to greet and hug every single person who stayed behind. We spoke about Hawai’i and the healing power of the salty ocean. He was born and grew up in O’ahu, his home until quite recently. He’s now in Washington and we spoke about the changes we also experienced. He was warm and generous with his time, energy, and spirit.
