Christmas on the West Side of Kaua’i

Most likely, if you’re visiting, you’re in the westside of Kaua’i because of Waimea Canyon. We also love driving up there, when it gets too hot, and it does on the west side. If you are, visit the beaches to see the wild wave breaks that are an art form. If you want to get into the water, Salt Pond Beach is safer for families and those less comfortable with the powerful Hawai’ian waves. Kekaha is great if you are a surfer.

Kaua’i is beautiful and views are spectacular anywhere on the island. Tourists love Hanalei in the north, Poʻipū in the south or Kapa’a in the east for a more central location. Living on the westside of Kaua’i has shown us another side of the island. It’s more low-key, more local, more community, and wow, what a place to see the sunsets. (The sunrise is also amazing here.)

Going past Waimea, head to Kekaha, a great place to watch surfers paddling out in the golden light. You also get great views of Niʻihau.

Grab some delicious poke and find a spot at the beach. Or grab a bite at one of the restaurants in Waimea like Wrangler’s Steakhouse.

If you’re a photographer, the westside of Kaua’i is a must when you visit this beautiful Hawai’ian island.

I can’t remember which movie now. There was a line – “west is best”. This is where we spent Christmas this year, down at the beach. Well, living in Kaua’i, we always head to the beach.

Many locals bring their tents down and have family days. And it is festive and full of music and laughter.

Seeing the ocean makes us smile. Being in the water, especially for Wade, is life itself. Me, I’m still getting my flippers so to speak. Still building and nourishing my relationship with the ocean.
